Dear Schweitzer Friend,

I hope Thanksgiving offered opportunities to be with those you hold closest in your heart. In addition to gaining a couple of pounds, the weekend produced in me a more grateful spirit for all that is good.  I find instructive the quote “Complaining is the language of hell. Praise is the language of heaven.”  While stuffing negative feelings and thoughts isn’t healthy, we don’t need to keep feeding an unhealthy mindset anymore than our body needs another dish of stuffing and sweet potatoes. Praise not only gives God His due but is good for the body, mind and spirit.

We now enter into the Advent Season which leads to Christmas and the celebration of Christ’s birth. This Sunday, we begin a series from the book of Isaiah with the message: The God Who Comforts. As we light the first candle of Advent, celebrate Holy Communion, and share words from Isaiah 40, we enter a season which offers meaningful and moving services of worship. You are invited to come and worship!

Enjoy dinner, tree decorating, treat making, and visiting Schweitzer’s home bound members — 6:00-7:30 p.m., December 6. RSVP to Nina Verbanaz, nverbanaz@sumc.co.

Add to the beauty of the sanctuary this Christmas by purchasing a poinsettia in memory or honor of a loved one. Cost is $12 and the cards are in the pew. Place card in offering bag on Sunday morning or contact Mary Beth, 881-6800 or mbowens@sumc.co.

Pick up a STAR located on the Sanctuary windows, Fellowship Center, or in the Outreach Center. Please bring unwrapped toys to the Fellowship Center by Monday, December 11. The toys will be forwarded on to the Crosslines Toystore for parents in need to shop for Christmas gifts for their children.

Church Conference

The Rev. Lynn Dyke, District Superintendent, will lead our annual Church Conference on Monday, December 4, 6:00 p.m. in Room 101.  In addition to the business of the conference, Rev. Dyke will lead us into a time of focusing on the three General Rules of the Church: Doing no harm, doing good and staying in love with God. All members of Schweitzer are invited to attend.

Staff Transitions

Coordinator of Community Impact

We are pleased that Krista Rosenbaum has accepted the full-time position of Coordinator of Community Impact, moving from her part-time role in our Kids Ministry. In addition to leading Church @ the Center, Krista will supervise our Coach House, serve as host of our Food Pantry, and help coordinate the Life Change Plan. Krista will be working closely with David Freeman, our new Director of Outreach Ministries.

Director of Facilities

Gary Lewis has accepted the position of Director of Facilities. Gary comes to us from the Montclair Retirement Community where he served as Maintenance Director. Gary will have overall responsibility for the management of the facilities. We look forward to welcoming him to Schweitzer in mid-December.

I look forward to seeing you in worship this Sunday!
