Highlights of Paul’s Missionary Journey
As you read this, I am on board the Celebrity Reflection Cruise beginning a 10 day journey through Educational Opportunities. Our tour will visit several biblical sites, including Athens, Corinth and Ephesus, places where the Apostle Paul visited on his missionary journeys. Susan and I are privileged to lead 20 persons on this tour with us, 18 from Schweitzer! We have shared in a six-week study of Paul in preparation for the trip, utilizing Adam Hamilton resource “The Call,” a review of Paul’s life and ministry. We do ask for your prayers for everyone’s safety, learning and spiritual growth on this trip.
We are receiving a good response across the congregation in support of “Looking Forward” as we seek to fully fund the renovation of the sanctuary and women’s restroom. Pastor Jason will be sharing in worship this Sunday the total amount we have received in pledges and gifts to date. If you have not as of yet made a commitment in support of these efforts, will you consider doing so during the next week? Thank you Schweitzer as we freshen up the Lord’s House and make it fully accessible to all!
Beginning on October 2, a giving kiosk will available in the Fellowship area. The kiosk provides another convenient way of giving. By using the kiosk, you can make donations by swiping either your debit or credit card. The kiosk is iPad-based and the touchscreen will guide you through the process in a few simple steps.
Schweitzer was awarded “Church of the Year” by the Council of Churches.
The Spirit led Pastor Jim, in accepting the award on our behalf, to say these words as he looked over the crowd: “You are the living signs God is alive in and through this community. You are, through the Spirit, tangible signs and movements of the Living God. You are the confirmation that Jesus sees the hungry, poor, marginalized, the hurting and moves, engages, listens, gives hope and more”. He then challenged Director Mark Struckhoff and the crowd “to consider sponsoring persons we serve, our clients, our guests, to be our guests at the banquet next year, to sit with us, to be inspired and then believe they too will one day stand on this stage–transformed and transforming–made in the image of God!” I believe Jim highlighted well the importance of the ministry of being in relationship with people, rather than simply doing for. Thanks for being a part of this ministry. We appreciate this honor and give God the Glory!
LETS will meet October 13th at 11:30 a.m. in Memorial Hall. Our speaker will be from Dickerson Park Zoo. Join us for “Fur, Feathers, and Scales.” Cost of meal: $8.00. RSVP to Deanna 861-8636.

The Holy Spirit series continues this Sunday with the important teaching “The Fruit of the Spirit.” I encourage you to read John 15 and Galatians 5 in preparation for worship. Thanks to the 300 plus people who are participating in groups and classes in this series! We continue to hear good reports and we sense the Spirit working in our midst in a myriad of ways. As we move in October, our prayer word of the month shifts from pursue to empower. We seek the Spirit to empower us as a congregation to be even more faithful and fruitful witnesses of Jesus Christ. As I am away from you, I will be continuing the daily readings and invite you to join me in this prayer: Lord, fill us with your Holy Spirit!
