Greetings Beloved!

A week ago, when the air was cooler, one of my sons declared, “it smells like fall.” He is thrilled with the change of the seasons and the new things that are on the horizon. Anticipating a new season is integral to the hope that God speaks to us through he prophet Isaiah (43.19). To the goodness of old things, God is always producing new wine and new wine skins (Matt 9.22). In the story of our lives and in Schweitzer’s story we celebrate God’s good work, and we look forward to the new wine, the new work that God is doing!

Some New Opportunities:

A Book Discussion — August 16, 6:30 p.m., in the Fellowship Center — Homo Deus by Yuval Noah Harari; The Benedict Option by Rod Dreher. In the first of the God, I have a Question sermons, Pastors Jake and Jason introduced us to Homo Deus and invited us to read it, or another book, The Benedict Option, and join them for a discussion. These two books are looking into the future and anticipate how life could be different from today. You are invited to join the conversation, whether you’ve read both, one, or none of the books (you can find good summaries online).

Starting Sept. 3, Kids in 1st through 6th grades will join together Sunday mornings from 9:10 to 9:35 in the Kids Worship space to praise the Lord with music. Through the joyful noise of singing, drumming, strumming, and clanging, kids will learn to praise and honor God through music. There will be opportunities for the kids to share their music throughout the year in worship and special events.

Kids Ministry Team

This fall, we have a new team leading the Kids Ministry. Angela Smith is our Interim Kids Director. She will be joined by Krista Rosenbaum and Nina Verbanaz as Assistant Interim Directors. Dawn Thompson completed five years of excellent Kids Ministry and we look forward to celebrating Dawn’s work in the future.

Your Vote Needed

This summer, we encouraged you to post pics on social media with #sumcGO. It’s now time to vote for your favorite submission. Go to and vote for your favorite #sumcGo pic. Winners will be announced at the upcoming SUMC Carnival on August 20, from 5-7. We hope you’ll bring a friend.

Music Ministry

Rehearsals begin again for the Chancel Choir and Senior Saints Choir and we invite you to sing with us. Chancel Choir will meet Wednesdays starting August 16, 6:30-7:45 p.m. Senior Saints Choir will meet Tuesdays, 1:00-2:00 p.m., starting August 22. Come join us as we sing praise to our God! Many students and teachers begin their trek into a new year. As they do, let us lift up a prayer:

Kind Father
Wisdom and Goodness flows from you and is available to us
With grateful minds and hearts, help students and teachers to seek knowledge and wisdom
May hallways, classrooms, study spaces, and gathering places be filled with truth, love, and grace
May a new school year remind us all that we are invited into the wonder of being life long learners
As we wonder and share in the work of Jesus and the Spirit.

We look forward to seeing you on Sunday as we begin a new sermon series, Growing as a Community.
