Dear Schweitzer Friends
October has arrived and with it cooler weather and some amazing nights. The picturesque skies have merged with Psalm 19, a psalm I’ve been reading this week:

(1)The heavens proclaim the glory of God.
The skies display his craftsmanship.
(7)The instructions of the Lord are perfect,
reviving the soul.
The decrees of the Lord are trustworthy,
making wise the simple.
(14)May the words of my mouth
and the meditation of my heart
be pleasing to you,
O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.

From the wonder of the heavens to reflecting on one’s own life. The Psalmist reminds us of God’s goodness, of where we can find renewal and joy – by trusting in the word of the Lord, and the need for our hearts to be cleansed and made whole so we can speak true words to God and one another.

One lament this week is that the St. Louis Cardinals and the Detroit Tigers both fell short in their quest for the baseball playoffs. Maybe next year. For now we will watch if the Cubs can turn a great year into a championship.

Tim Smith has some great news to report from the Youth Ministry:
In the past month, our students raised money through their Operation Build-a-Bear campaign and raised over $580. With this money, the students met at Build-a-Bear in Battlefield Mall this past Sunday afternoon to make the bears and will be delivering the bears to children that need a smile and some prayer on Sunday, October 22nd.
youth-focus
The students are also starting a new Wednesday night series this week called, “Focus.” The youth will be focusing their attention on the book of Colossians. Teenagers today are constantly bombarded with values and messages from their culture. This study will remind us that there’s a right way to live and prayerfully ask God to fill His people with spiritual wisdom. We are excited to get started!

October’s Business as Ministry (BAM) session is October 18th, 6PM, in the Outreach Center. Chris Langston, co-founder and co-captain at 40 Digits, will be leading on “Shaping and Refining your Vision and Mission.” Bring a colleague from your office and imagine how a new or renewed vision can add value to your business/work. E-mail jleininger@sumc.co for more information.
ya-hike
Schweitzer’s Young Adult Ministry will be taking a hiking trek.
Join us on Saturday, Oct. 22 for a day-hike in the beautiful hills of Arkansas. Meet in parking lot behind the Outreach Center at 9 a.m. We’ll be visiting the famous Whitaker’s Point as well as a couple of other locations throughout the day. Bring your own lunch, snacks, and water bottles. We’ll be back in Springfield around dinner time. Check the Young Adults Facebook page for more details and updates.

Live Well
Live Well is a non-threatening educational gathering for individuals experiencing depression. The program teaches effective strategies to increase health and wholeness in one’s body, mind, and spirit.

Live Well will meet Sunday afternoons from 4:00-5:30 for eight weeks, beginning October 30th. Contact newbyhe@otc.edu.

Looking Forward . . . Moving Forward
This past week contracts were signed and dates marked on the calendar, November 7th, for starting the refurbishing of the women’s restroom and sanctuary. Thanks for your prayers and pledges that will make these venues accessible to all and ready for service years into the future.
hs-is-with-you1
This Sunday, we continue in “The Holy Spirit is With You.” As we have been on this journey through worship, a book, and a group experience, we would love to know what impact it’s having with you. We invite you to send along a couple of sentences or a short paragraph of the Holy Spirit’s impact to jfugitt@sumc.co.

This season of the year is perfect for gathering with family and friends around a camp fire, roasting s’mores, and telling stories. Be encouraged to take full advantage of the opportunities that are before us. Be welcoming to the outsider, be generous with mercy, tell the good stories of God – who sets the heavens in place and whose Spirit brings life to you.

We love you and are honored to love God with you.
