God’s Love Lives When We Give.

Read 1 John 4:7-10.

7Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. 8Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. 9This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. 10This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.

When first reading verse 7, we may think “Hey, most people love someone or something. Does this mean most people are Christians?” Additional study lends this explanation of this verse. The world’s definition of love is feeling and emotion. A person loves something or someone because they get something in return. The biblical love is that of sacrifice and of will, not emotion. God chose to love us and sacrifice his only son. God chose to share his love with us, and has instilled in us love to share. If we have his love within us, then we have his love to freely share with others. Like God’s love, true biblical love is not based on merit or what we can “get out of it.”

11Finally, brothers and sisters, rejoice! Strive for full restoration, encourage one another, be of one mind, live in peace. And the God of love and peace will be with you.
12Greet one another with a holy kiss. 13All God’s people here send their greetings.
