The Way of Humility
Kind Father . . .in James 4 we read about the big role Humility plays in contributing to your good and beautiful community. Deliver us from the sin of pride that builds walls of vanity and castles of seclusion. In humility we find Jesus’ way. Open, we pray, the pathway of humility.
He has shown you, O mortal, what is good.
And what does the LORD require of you?
To act justly and to love mercy
and to walk humbly with your God.
Questions for Group Discussion
Icebreaker: What’s something deep down you want but are pretty sure God would never give you?
• When was the last time you recognized you were being self-centered and worldly-focused in what you wanted? Which sinful behaviors emerged in you as a result?
• How can we assess whether our prayers are really just self-centered desires?
• What does a truly humble person look like according to James? Describe someone who lives out the kind of humility James advocates for in chapter four.
• What should people think about—and what should they say—as they plan out the futures they hope to live?
Application: This world trains us to live and act in a self-serving manner, which disrupts/corrupts God’s design for community. Counter intuitively, in humility, we find that God supplies us with his grace, answers our prayers, and fills us with contentment.
