The Alpha Course

Exploring the Christian faith with a community of people looking for answers

What is Alpha?

Alpha is a global event that Schweitzer hosts. No two Alpha sessions are alike, but they generally have a few key things in common: food, a talk, and good conversation. Schweitzer is no exception!

Each week looks at a different question that people often have about Christianity and is designed to create good discussion in an open, informal and safe space to explore life’s big questions together. Most importantly, everyone is welcome.

Can I try it first?

Preceding every Alpha Course is an Introductory Alpha Dinner, giving anyone and everyone an opportunity to learn more about the Alpha Course. The evening includes a free meal, video teaching and testimonies from people who have gone through Alpha.

This is a one-time, commitment-free event. We know that your time is valuable, and although we think Alpha is incredible, we want you to be able to make that call for yourself.

what can i expect if i commit?

First up, there's food...

We know food has a way of bringing people together, and we use that to help ease everyone into the night. Good food can be a great conversation starter, and that's what we're all about.

Then, a talk...

This can seem kind of dull, but rest assured, it's anything but. At Schweitzer, we play video teachings from Nicky Gumbel, the leader and creator of Alpha, that are designed to engage and inspire conversation. They explore the big issues around faith and unpack the basics of Christianity.

Followed by discussion

Probably the most important part of the meetings: the chance to share thoughts and ideas on a topic, and simply discuss it in a small group. There's no obligation to say anything, and there's nothing you can't say. It's an opportunity to hear from others and contribute your own perspective in an honest, safe and open environment.
