Schweitzer News – December 3, 2019

Joanne BuskeNews

Come celebrate Christmas with a pasta lunch and a performance by the Schweitzer Puppet Ministry of The Little Shepherd puppet show this Sunday, December 8, 12:00-1:30 p.m., in our gym.

We will be gathering toys for Crosslines as we share the joy of the holidays with families who are not able to afford gifts for their children. Pick up a star this Sunday from the windows as you enter the sanctuary or around the sound booth in the Outreach Center. Purchase the age-appropriate toy listed on the star and bring your UNWRAPPED toy to our Christmas tree in the Fellowship Center NO LATER than December 15. Thank you for sharing the joy!

Poinsettias have been ordered to add to the beauty in the Sanctuary this Christmas. We invite you to purchase poinsettias in memory or honor of a loved one. The cost is $12. Cards are located in the pews or you may email Mary Beth, mbowens@sumc.co. Deadline to order is December 11. Poinsettias can be picked up after the 8:00 p.m. service on December 24.

What better way to enter the Advent season than to step into the magical world of Narnia. Come watch Narnia as a family in the Outreach Center on December 14th. Doors open at 5:15 p.m. Movie starts at 5:30 p.m. We’ll be enjoying cocoa and snacks!

We want to be sure that Schweitzer is offering a warm welcome to everyone who enters our doors on Christmas Eve. This year we will be offering three worship services: 4:00 p.m., 6:00 p.m., and 8:00 p.m.. Childcare will be provided for children, 3 and under, during the 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. services. If you would be willing to serve as a greeter, usher, or communion server on Christmas Eve, contact Sheila Pippin at spippin@sumc.co. You can also call/text her at 417-861-0861, or call the church office at 417-881-6800, extension 230.

This Christmas Eve, we invite you to join us as we celebrate the hope and peace born into our world. Come and celebrate the miracle of the Christ child. The miracle that says to us: God is with you!

Jobs for Life Recap

Thanks to all who support of the Jobs for Life ministry in 2019. It was another amazing year! There were a total of 41 students enrolled, and of those 41, 30 graduated from the program. Out of the 30 graduates, 22 have full- or part-time employment.

We also had 19 new champion/mentors this year, representing 11 different churches from Springfield. Three of those champions are now going to be instructors for upcoming sessions. In April of this year, our Jobs for Life program partnered with Life360-Fairbanks and Praise Assembly of God to bring the Jobs for Life CORE Training to Springfield. Twenty-three people attended that training.

As we move forward into 2020, Scott Warren, our Jobs for Life Director, has two major goals: 1) Have three trained instructors, and 2) Continue building business partnerships by holding a round table discussion with 10-15 businesses to generate a clearer understanding and better working involvement among the business community.
