Gathering Question

Share the worst weed in your yard or garden that you’ve ever dealt with.

Gathering Prayer

What stood out to you in the sermon? What insights did you gain? What questions did it raise?

Verse 7 says, “Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants.”  Then Jesus explains the meaning of this in verse 22, where he says, “The seed falling among the thorns refers to someone who hears the word, but the worries of life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke the word, making it unfruitful.”

The most often repeated command in the Bible is “Do not fear.”

  • Does that surprise you? Why or why not?
  • Why is it so easy to let worry and fear choke our faith?
  • How do worry and fear hold us back in our ministry for God?

Joshua 1:7-9 says, “Be strong and courageous. Be careful to obey all the laws my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go. Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”

  • How have you experienced God’s strength and courage?
  • How can meditating on God’s word grow our strength and courage to help free us from worry and fear?

Philippians 4:6-7 says, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

  • How can prayer help us with our worries and fears?
  • When and how have you experienced the peace of God through prayer?

The Bible also talks a lot about money. Jesus did, too. Half of all of Jesus’ parables are about money and one in ten of all the verses in the New Testament are about money.

  • Does that surprise you? Why or why not?
  • How does talking about money make you feel? Why?
  • Why do you think Jesus talked so much about money?
  • What connection do you see between our relationship with money and our relationship with God?

A man asked Jesus, “What must I do to inherit eternal life?”  In his answer Jesus emphasized that God has to have first place in our heart.

  • Why is it so easy to let money and financial concerns take over first place in our lives?
  • What are some of the other things besides money that can take over first place in our lives instead of God?
  • What are some things you can do to keep God first in your life?

Closing Prayer

Allow time for silent prayer for each person to offer themselves to be used by God to make an exponential impact in the world.
